COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

What is Cognitive Development?

Cognitive Development is how children think and figure things out.  It is how their knowledge, skills, and problem solving develops.  This is how children begin to think and understand the world around them.

Why is Cognitive Development important?

You can help your child begin to grow their cognitive development as soon as he/she is born! You will be providing a foundation for your child for their future success!

As a parent, what can I do to help foster my child's cognitive development?

By talking with your baby and saying names for common objects you will be growing his/her cognitive development. Singing and reading to your baby are also great ways!  Introducing toys such as books and puzzles will allow your child to learn problem solving and decision making.

 *Interesting Fact*

Theorist Jean Piaget suggested that children move through four stages of mental development and his cognitive development theories focus on understanding how young children acquire knowledge and also understanding the nature of their intelligence.  The four stages are sensorimotor stage which happens from birth to 2 years, the preoperational stage which is from age 2 to age 7, the concrete operational stage which is from age 7 to age 11, and finally the formal operational stage which is for ages 12 and up.

Piaget strongly believed that children play an active role in their learning process and as they interact with the world around them they are constantly adding new knowledge, building on their existing knowledge, and adapting their ideas to take on new information.

What do I do if my child is missing cognitive milestones?
All children are different and they meet milestones at their own pace.  Missing a milestone does not immediately mean there is a disability.  If you are concerned with your child's cognitive development do not ignore those gut instincts.  Speak to your child's teacher or pediatrician about your concerns.
